Cowley Road

Cowley Road, oil on canvas, 2007, 41 × 30 cm (1′ 4″ × 1′) @ 31°

Using a night-time setting for this painting allows one to see Cowley's unique beauty as a dazzling kaleidoscope of multi-coloured lights. The bustle of the street is captured by using an image taken from a photograph with a long exposure which blurs the motion of figures and vehicles. This dynamic impression is reinforced by the angle of the canvas which allows the road to be drawn from corner to corner, and contrasts the shops with a large expanse of night sky and empty pavement.
